3D Mapping the Galaxy

Not here yet, but it is on the way.

By employing the likes of robots, fiber optics, spectrometers, and other sci-fi type technologies, the Science and Technology Facilities Council plans to map out over one billion stars.  The technology is already in place to map out the stars in a 2-dimensional fashion.  This additional funding will allow the development of a process to track the third dimension.

Who wouldn’t love to see an accurate 3D model of the galaxy?

Learn T-Splines – A 5 Step Guide

Sometimes, especially in the world of CAD software, a sizable learning curve can turn you off to becoming proficient at something new. However, if you could compress that learning curve into a simple 5 step process, it becomes a far more comfortable task. That’s precisely what the gang over at T-Splines has done for us.

Not that T-Splines is the most difficult product to familiarize yourself with, but for some of those Rhino users who are picking it up after learning Rhino, it is a different way of thinking. That is more than enough to introduce some tiring challenges. So, without further delay, here is the 5 Step Starter Guide for T-Splines.

Building Rome (Digitally) – And Anything Else for that Matter

It seems some smart minds at UNC Chapel Hill have employed the millions of photos available on Flickr, as well as some pretty fancy math to develop an advanced process of creating 3-dimensional models of virtually anything anyone has taken a picture of – anywhere. Using the photos that are found via certain search criteria, a 3D environment is created, then converted into a geometrical representation of the scene.

Here is a video that walks through the basics of the process.

Visit their site for more information, videos, and points of interest.

Clicking on a marker on the map for Rome, will allow you to view the photos and the video of the model created for that particular point of interest.
